For years JUUL Labs featured several “fun” flavors for their JUUL e-cigarette pods, claiming their products helped traditional cigarette users quit smoking. Along with the traditional tobacco e-liquid pod, the e-cigarette company created nearly a dozen “kid-friendly” JUUL flavors. These vaping pods were marketed with colorful names like mango, fruit, crème, and mint. JUUL encouraged users to try all of the flavors to see which was their favorite.
On October 17, 2019 JUUL Labs stopped selling all varieties of their flavored vaping pods, except for menthol and tobacco, due to growing backlash from the public. According to health officials, JUUL and other e-cigarette companies’ flavored pods addicted young people to nicotine products, causing youth’s severe injuries and nicotine addictions. In fact, many cite JUUL and their flavor pods as the reason for America’s youth vaping epidemic.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, over a quarter of high school students admitted to using e-cigarettes in 2019, with the majority saying they vaped fruity and minty flavors.
"We know that flavors is the No. 1 reason why youth are interested in starting," said Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, a professor at Stanford University and expert in teen vaping. "They start for the flavors, and they continue because of the nicotine."
Nicotine can harm developing adolescents’ brains, as the brain keeps growing until around the age of 25. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about two-thirds of young adult JUUL users do not know that JUUL products always contain nicotine, and high levels of nicotine at that. According to JUUL Labs, a single JUUL flavor pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. Some research suggests that amount could actually be double due to JUUL's use of nicotine salts.
“Using nicotine in adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control,” reports the CDC. “Young people’s brains build synapses faster than adult brains. Nicotine changes the way these synapses are formed.”
In January 2020 the FDA finalized an enforcement policy banning unauthorized e-cigarette flavors that appeal to kids, such as fruit and mint. However, increasing numbers of JUUL lawsuits from across the nation claim JUUL flavors caused young adults’ severe nicotine addictions and injuries. Some cite JUUL illegally marketed their JUUL flavors to young adults, using the kid-friendly flavors to entice kids to try vaping.
