Smith & Nephew first released the Emperion Modular Hip System in 2006. As a modular system, it contains several interchangeable parts made out of titanium. The two major components, the ‘stem’ and the ‘sleeve’, can be mixed and matched by surgeons to meet the needs of each patient.

Surgeons insert the stem part into the thigh bone of patients during hip implant surgery. According to Smith & Nephew, the Emperion stem design “is intended to promote stem stability while minimizing stress-shielding, micromotion, stiffness and thigh pain.”

Since its release, claims indicate the Emperion Hip System caused patients to experience severe injuries. According to reports, the small crevices between the system’s parts and the constant grinding of the parts against one another caused Emperion hip implants to prematurely fail.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information indicated that “the benefits of modularity come with the potential drawback of a combination of fretting and crevice corrosion at the modular junction, which may accelerate fatigue, crack initiation and ultimately reduce the hip longevity.”

In a study published in 2016, researchers found a 68-year-old man implanted with an Emperion hip stem experienced hip implant failure only six years after implantation. Metal-on-metal implants should last far longer, raising concerns about the safety of the Emperion system’s design and instructions for implantation. Hip implant failure requires revision surgery to fix, and this is often an invasive and painful surgery for patients.

Along with the potential to fracture and fail, metal-on-metal implants have been found to cause a severe type of metal poisoning called metallosis. Injury reports have found Smith & Nephew hip implants can grind against one another, causing metal particles to flake off into patients’ bloodstreams and tissue surrounding the implant. Metal particles in the bloodstream can cause poisoning and side effects like anxiety, headaches, tissue damage, and even tissue and bone death.
