Emperion Modular Hip System
Complications with the Emperion Hip System
Over the years Smith & Nephew Company has faced hundreds of complaints about their metal-on-metal hip implants. Injury reports and health officials indicate metal-on-metal hip implants can cause metal poisoning, fracturing, and premature failure. These complications often require patients to undergo painful revision surgery to remove the dangerous hip implant.
The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR), R3 Acetabular System, and Modular SMF and Redapt Systems are several of Smith & Nephew’s hip implant models that experienced complications due to their metal-on-metal design. Along with these models, the U.K. company's Emperion Modular Hip System is under scrutiny for premature failure and implant cracking. Below, we explain several of the problems caused by Emperion hip implants and how patients can seek help for their hip implant injuries.
Emperion System Background
Smith & Nephew first released the Emperion Modular Hip System in 2006. As a modular system, it contains several interchangeable parts made out of titanium. The two major components, the ‘stem’ and the ‘sleeve’, can be mixed and matched by surgeons to meet the needs of each patient.
Surgeons insert the stem part into the thigh bone of patients during hip implant surgery. According to
Smith & Nephew, the Emperion stem design “is intended to promote stem stability while minimizing stress-shielding, micromotion, stiffness and thigh pain.”
Emperion Hip System Injuries
Since its release, claims indicate the Emperion Hip System caused patients to experience severe injuries. According to reports, the small crevices between the system’s parts and the constant grinding of the parts against one another caused Emperion hip implants to prematurely fail.
The National Center for Biotechnology Information indicated that “the benefits of modularity come with the potential drawback of a combination of fretting and crevice corrosion at the modular junction, which may accelerate fatigue, crack initiation and ultimately reduce the hip longevity.”
In a
study published in 2016, researchers found a 68-year-old man implanted with an Emperion hip stem experienced hip implant failure only six years after implantation. Metal-on-metal implants should last far longer, raising concerns about the safety of the Emperion system’s design and instructions for implantation. Hip implant failure requires revision surgery to fix, and this is often an invasive and painful surgery for patients.
Along with the potential to fracture and fail, metal-on-metal implants have been found to cause a severe type of metal poisoning called metallosis. Injury reports have found Smith & Nephew hip implants can grind against one another, causing metal particles to flake off into patients’ bloodstreams and tissue surrounding the implant. Metal particles in the bloodstream can cause poisoning and side effects like anxiety, headaches, tissue damage, and even tissue and bone death.
Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Lawsuits
Hip implant patients from across the U.S. have filed and continue to file lawsuits against Smith & Nephew for injuries caused by their metal-on-metal hip implants. Each of these claims raise similar allegations that Smith & Nephew’s metal-on-metal hip implants caused the injuries and suffering of hip implant patients. Currently, Smith & Nephew faces hundreds of lawsuits in the U.S. federal courts over their hip implants, particularly the BHR hip implant system.
We do not want Smith & Nephew to continue deceptively creating and marketing their dangerous products without any consequences. When they create and market dangerous devices without being held responsible, their negligence hurts you and future users of Smith & Nephew products, as well.
By holding Smith & Nephew accountable for their actions in court, we draw their negligence into the public eye and put a monetary amount on the damage they caused. If you believe your Smith & Nephew metal-on-metal hip implant caused your injuries, you may be eligible to file a claim against the company and recover compensation.
We know compensation cannot fix the pain Smith & Nephew caused you. But compensation can help you recover from financial burdens caused by your failed hip implant, like loss of wages, pain & suffering, and medical bills.
