The acetabular hip replacement system was commonly used in hip replacement surgeries across the country. Composed of a porous foam and coated with a metal called tritanium, a titanium alloy, the acetabular shell was supposed to help with hip replacement surgeries by encouraging bone cell growth and joint stability. When it was released by Stryker in 2008, it seemed to perform well in surgeries and be an instant success.

However, increasing reports submitted to the Food and Drug Administration’s Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database show that the tritanium hip implant had a high rate of loosening and failing inside of patients, causing severe complications. In a 2018 report, doctors found five implant failures that were associated with Stryker’s tritanium cups, the devices implanted as early as 2011. Within a few months from their hip replacement surgeries, the patients in the study, ranging in age from 49 to 68, all developed hip and groin pain from the acetabular shell loosening. Several other studies have noted problems with Stryker’s tritanium shells, showing that they have poor clinical function from deterioration and loosening.
