The PerFix Plug hernia repair mesh is the subject of the latest PerFix Plug lawsuits due to the devices ability to become dislodged, erode nearby tissues, and damage nerves. The small, polypropylene plugs are used to close small holes in the abdominal wall. The goal of this procedure was to prevent hernias from forming and causing damage to both the abdominal wall as well as the digestive tract.
PerFix Plug Hernia Mesh
Bard, the manufacturer of the PerFix Plug hernia mesh created the device as an alternative to other mesh products already on the market. The plug's unique designed called for a less invasive procedure that required fewer sutures and smaller incisions. The intended result was less damage to the surrounding tissues, minimized risk of infection, and a shorter recovery time.
Although this was achieved in some cases, other patients weren't so lucky. Because there were fewer sutures used to hold the mesh in place, there was a greater risk that the plug could eventually migrate out of its intended location, causing damage to nearby tissues and organs.
Complications Associated with PerFix Plug
Many of the PerFix Plug lawsuits listed the following complications in association with the mesh device:
- Perforation of the bowel
- Damage to nearby organs
- Extreme, chronic pain
- Scar tissues and adhesions
- Movement or migration of the plug to different areas
- Rejection of the plug
- Secondary hernias
- Infections
Many patients reported several of these symptoms. They were forced to undergo additional surgical procedures and suffered extreme financial hardship due to missed work and medical expenses.
The PerFix Plug hernia mesh was known to be extremely risky for certain types of hernias, especially inguinal hernias found in men. The mesh was used despite the possible risks causing many men to experience sexual and urinary dysfunction. These specific cases led to a recall of the PerFix Plug due to what the manufacturer called a labeling error.
PerFix Plug lawsuits are filed in an attempt to provide those who have been injured by the composite mesh a chance at compensation. When this type of mesh fails, it leads to additional surgical procedures, lost wages, financial difficulties, as well as the possibility of a decreased quality of life. Many of the complications patients experience are extremely painful and are often the result of an infection that can be life-threatening if not addressed. Call and schedule a consultation with a qualified personal injury attorney if you have questions concerning the PerFix Plug lawsuit and how filing could benefit you.
